Community Banners Resist Government Spin Job

PR Log (Press Release) – Dec 19, 2009 – Surrey and Delta, BC – On the final day of the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, local residents hung a series of community banners over government billboards used to promote the $1-billion South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR), part of the province's controversial Gateway freeway expansion program.
In recent months, the billboards have been erected throughout the region featuring contradictory claims about the supposed benefits of the project, such as “reducing congestion” and “strengthening the economy”.
Regarding congestion, Premier Gordon Campbell said in 2003 at GVRD Council of Councils, “you cannot build your way out of congestion”.  Adding four lanes of pavement to our communities would add thousands of new vehicles and new trips to fill the new capacity.  The Provincial and Federal governments have provided massive investments to the Port in Prince Rupert to develop its container handling abilities, yet the Prince Rupert port is being used at less than half of its capacity. This calls into question the billions being spent on port and freeway expansion in Delta, while the Province delays or cancels critical social programs such as:
-School Seismic Upgrades (jobs, safety, education)                                                                                          
-Seniors Health Care (jobs, health, respect for the people who built this Province)                            
-LiveSmartBC (programs to help reduce greenhouse gases in homes and businesses)
Our Premier and Prime Minister are in Copenhagen claiming to work toward a global climate treaty, yet at home they are paving farmland (90 hectares of the best farmland in Canada), paving Burns Bog (the largest carbon sink in the Lower Mainland), and paving the banks of the Fraser River (endangering the most important salmon-bearing river in North America).  Even the government's own studies say that the Gateway freeways will increase GHG emissions by over 160,000 tonnes per year, over 11 times the claimed reduction for the $2 billion Canada Line.

Mercedes Benz E Class Convertible Details and Photos Released

PR Log (Press Release) – Dec 17, 2009 – Daimler has dropped the official word about the new Mercedes Benz E Class Cabriolet. The two-door car, available with seven engine configurations in Europe, will go on sale from January 11.
Despite going on sale early next year, the company still says that the market launch will take place in March. This will be timed both for the Geneva Motor Show, but also for the beginning of the all-important convertible season.
Six of the models - E200 CGI, E250 CGI, E350 CGI, E220 CDI, E250 CDI, E350 CDI - come with the BlueEFFICIENCY moniker. The diesels range from 170 to 231 horsepower, while the petrol engines start at 184 hp on up to 292 hp. The E500 gets the benefit of 388 horsepower, likely generated from a 5.5-liter V8 unit.
One of the innovations seen on the car is the new AirCap system. With a button push, the passengers sitting in the four individual seats will notice a reduction in turbulence and noise, and an increase in warm air thanks to AirScarf. This is very useful when the soft top is taken down, a task that takes less than 20 seconds and can be completed at speeds up to 25 mph.
When the weather does not suit open-air driving, the "all-year-round" car makes use of an acoustic soft top, which keeps the interior comfortably quiet up to 124 mph. It makes good use of insulation, bringing the thickness to 23.5 mm, and keeping the interior warm even in the winter.
Seven airbags, thick dual rollover bars, and tilt sensor are all included in the safety features. Crash-responsive head restraints are standard at the front only.
The Mercedes Benz E Class Cabriolet is the fourth Mercedes Benz E Class model. It joins the Saloon, Coupé, and recently-launched Wagon. You can read a great deal more about the convertible in the press release below.

Open Letter to Director General and members of IATA

Dear Mr. Bisignani and members of IATA,
having supported the aviation industry over the last year in their response to the EU-ETS, it is clear that there is reluctance on the part of many aviation companies to accept the long term financial impact of Climate Change. This is dangerous to say the least, and very short-sighted. We have experienced this process already in supporting other industries in their approach to CO2 monitoring and emissions trading and there was also naturally reluctance at first. But the simple fact is that, even without the EU-ETS this is not going to go away, there is no turning back the clock, and those who are well prepared can only benefit.
It is understandable that airlines are holding back, there is still much confusion and debate surrounding the EU-ETS and the administration and implementation by the EU leaves much to be desired. Firstly, is it even legal? Can the EU impose such a ruling over global aviation operators? Secondly, if even IATA and the ICAO do not fully support the system, then why should its members? And last but not least, airlines have many other concerns right now and why should the long-term impact of the EU-ETS in the years to come detract from the issues of today and tomorrow? This can seem simply too far away right now.
However, even when other solutions may be possible in time, Emissions Trading Schemes are certainly the best options available for companies. Contrary to tax-based mechanisms, a commercial-based system provides industry with flexibility and the potential for companies to develop their own individual approach and strategy in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. This saves costs and enables increased competitiveness for those companies clever enough to seize the opportunities.
And meeting its requirements is not difficult, a little expertise is required certainly, but many airlines are already building this expertise and there is no shortage of qualified companies able to help.
In your presentation to the 15th Conference of the Parties (UNFCCC COP15) in Copenhagen you claim that aviation serves as a role model in seeking to reduce its carbon footprint, I ask you to let the industries which have gone before you into the EU-ETS be your role models. These industries have continued their efforts to reduce harmful emissions, strengthened their CO2 management and reporting mechanisms AND embraced the EU ETS. Of course, each industry must continue to drive ways of reducing CO2 and other greenhouse gases – in the case of aviation your four-pillar strategy has already produced dramatic results and your continued efforts are to be applauded. But the Global Sectoral Approach you call for is still a long way off, the EU ETS is here now, is manageable, and airlines can use it strategically to learn for the future.
Your membership is looking to you for guidance, and I ask you to encourage your members to stop waiting for something better and to open their eyes to the possibilities which the EU ETS as the first and only living market based environmental scheme offers. There is no turning back, instead, embrace the EU ETS and then improve the system from within.
Waiting for something better to come along is not an option.

Escape Chutes From Zodiac-DBC Marine Safety Systems Chosen To Re-equip Mexican Ferry

PR Log (Press Release) – Dec 08, 2009 – The ferry sails between Mazatlan and La Paz on the Baja Peninsula and its owners have decided to replace their existing chutes with Zodiac/DBC systems. The  owners' decision was based on calculations of comparative long tem ownership costs. The company found that although its original evacuation system had appeared to be the cheapest when they were originally purchased, unexpected service fee increases after two years had eliminated any saving and made their overall cost of ownership much higher when compared with competitors that had tendered for the original installation.
    Faced with unacceptable service costs Baja Ferries consequently turned to British Columbia-based DBC Marine Safety Systems. The ferry operator was surprised to discover that the size of the service cost increases were so great that it was possible to completely replace the original escape systems with Zodiac/DBC equipment and to have them serviced regularly for less than the fee that was being charged by the previous supplier. Because Zodiac/DBC service charges can be fixed for an extended period, Baja Ferries realised that the cost of replacing their original installation with Zodiac/DBC marine evacuation chutes will be paid off within 3 to 4 years and they will be saving money thereafter.
    “This is a significant order for DBC Marine” explained general manager Gary Birchenko. “It will also demonstrate to other ship operators that there is an alternative to living with excessive service fees. The situation appears to arise from purchasing departments being seduced by prices that can be up to 40 per cent lower than those tendered by competing suppliers. Because they are classed as operational costs, the high service fees that arise later do not appear to be considered during purchase and ship owners can find themselves apparently tied to equipment that is unreasonably expensive to maintain.”
     “By consulting DBC Systems, Baja Ferries discovered that that there was an economical alternative and we are pleased to be supplying the company with some exceptional products.” Gary Birchenko explained: “The DBC Marine Evacuation Chute has full SOLAS certification, and carries Type Approvals from Bureau Veritas, (CE Certification) Transport Canada, and the United States Coast Guard. It enjoys an enviable safety record with over 15,000 safe descents since the first one was manufactured in the 1980s. The patented design of this chute requires no effort from the user in order to safely descend;  it easily accommodates stretchers, certain types of survival suits and breathing apparatus wearers. These features are proving attractive to a wide range of ship operators and to the offshore oil and gas Industry,” said Birchenko.
    DBC Marine is part of the Zodiac SOLAS group and is responsible for the manufacture and servicing of marine evacuation systems, rigid inflatable boats, life rafts, life jackets and marine firefighting equipment.  DBC Marine received certification and compliance registration to ISO14001; 2006 Environmental Standards, and ISO9001; 2008 Standards of Quality Assurance. In addition, it continues to maintain Transport Canada Airworthiness Certification for overhaul and distribution of lifesaving equipment and appliances to the aviation industry. Zodiac SOLAS Global Headquarters are located in Paris, France.

The new Fusion Hybrid model has played an important role in Fusion’s success.  The vehicle delivers a certified 41 mpg rating in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, topping the Toyota Camry hybrid by 8 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway.  It also offers innovative new technology – SmartGauge™ with EcoGuide – that coaches hybrid drivers to maximize fuel efficiency.
Sales of the new Fusion Hybrid are strong, accounting for almost 20 percent of total Fusion retail sales.  And more than 60 percent of Fusion Hybrid sales have been to customers coming from import brands – mostly Toyota and Honda – according to information from Product Information Network, a division of J.D. Power and Associates.
According to Fusion Marketing Manager Jonathan Richards, car buyers are so passionate about Fusion that they are choosing to buy the high series models – Hybrid, SEL and Sport.
“Data shows that high series models account for 50 percent of sales,” he said.  “Customers are also embracing technology offerings like voice-activated navigation, SYNC® and Sony® Audio.”
Richards says the introduction of a Sport model is also drawing praise from Fusion customers as is the new six-speed gearbox with SelectShift transmission.

Staffordshire Police sign up for TravelWise challenge

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 28, 2009 – Staffordshire Police will be beating a path for fitness after they signed up for a healthy challenge.
Over 50 members of the force have volunteered to take part in the TravelWise Walking Challenge, which starts on September 21 and runs through October,  and encourages people to walk at least 10,000 steps per day, five days a week.
The four-week challenge aims to improve physical activity and hopes to attract both individuals and businesses to take part.
Hundreds of walkers, including the plucky police participants, are set to receive free pedometers from TravelWise so they can monitor their steps.
TravelWise will also send a form for individuals to keep a note of their daily steps and, at the end of the challenge, the teams and individuals who have made the most progress will receive awards.
Alison Maydew, support services senior assistant with Staffordshire Police, said the group was looking forward to the challenge: “This is the second year we have taken up the TravelWise Walking Challenge.
“We decided to do it again because it was great fun last time and it is a great way to help the environment and to help people who are not getting as much exercise as they should.
“10,000 steps sounds like a lot but it is really about making people aware of just how much they are doing.
“You don’t have to do anything out of the ordinary, just keep track of your steps, and a few of our group have already been popping out at lunch to top up their total.”
Joanne Rainbow, travel plan co-ordinator for TravelWise, said: “It is great news at the police force have decided to join in once again. The staff involved will be from a number of different disciplines and that will be reflected in the results.
“The challenge is all about helping people monitor the amount they walk and, if necessary, thinking about adding to their total during and after the challenge.”

Among jet aircraft models with a history of at least two million flights, the current generation of the 737* has the lowest fatal lane crash rate, followed by the A320, the previous generation of the 737**, the Canadair CRJ, and the MD80/MD90. Of these models, the MD80/MD90 series has been in service the longest, since 1980. The previous generation of the 737 has the most flights, with just over 62 million.
Airliner models are ranked using a combination of the number of fatal plane crashes, the percentage of passengers killed in that crash, and the total number of flights of that model. Only plane crashes involving at least one passenger death are included. AirSafe.com's method of computing these rates gives more weight to those crashes that kill most or all of the passengers, and less weight to those that kill a small proportion of passengers. The formulas and definitions used are explained in detail at AirSafe.com
The number of flights are current as of 31 December 2008 for the following models: Airbus, Boeing, BAe 146/RJ100, Concorde, Fokker, and Lockheed. Stinger Welding Inc. saves bay area highway transportation, again

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 08, 2009 – Stinger Welding fabricated the 3 million pound steel truss Bridge Tie In section that was supposed to open on early Tuesday morning. During the closure, CalTrans performed a routine scheduled inspection of the entire bridge. They found a crack on the existing 73 year old bridge structure that would have kept the bridge closed for undetermined amount of time for repair. C.C. Myers, the General Contractor on the project, contacted Stinger Welding to fabricate special saddles to reinforce the damaged eyebar. The crack was unrelated to the project that shut down the bridge over the weekend, Caltrans said. Caltrans said the cracked eyebar by itself would have forced officials to close the bridge for repairs. Dan Himick, president of C.C. Myers, the contractor on the weekend project, said, "... It's amazing how fast they got it done. Everything fit perfect, the fix is in place." Stinger Welding went into high gear and as the design was being engineered and detailed, SWI had available steel at the Coolidge facility, collected the team, worked 18 hours straight and freighted the cargo to Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix where a DC-9 cargo plane waited to deliver the parts. Once in Oakland, this brace was rushed to the bridge aboard a flatbed truck escorted by the California Highway Patrol. The fabricated parts will reinforce the broken component and redistribute tension away from the damaged area.
Stinger came through with the fabrication and delivery of the 18,000 pounds of fabricated retrofitted assemblies in less 24 hours on a holiday weekend in time for the Bay Bridge to open during morning rush hour traffic.

SMS Gupshup and ICICI Lombard join hands to bring you traffic alerts

PRLog (Press Release) – Aug 27, 2009 – The Mumbai Traffic Police has created three traffic communities TrafficCity, TrafficEast and TrafficWest that are sponsored by ICICI Lombard and will send traffic alerts to the community members twice a day.
Members of the community would receive text messages during the morning and the evening. Based on the information received, commuters would be made aware of the traffic conditions they in turn can make an informed decision on which route to take. To facilitate even better commuting experience, Mumbai Traffic Police will disseminate additional messages in cases like traffic jams, accidents, processions, political rallies, religious congregations and floods.

During many wars, Quang Nam was one of the cradles of the revolutionary movement. Bo Bo, Nui Chua, Vinh Trinh, Cho Duoc, Chu Lai and underground tunnels of Ky Anh, the Ho Chi Minh Trail have gone down in history as the destinations for tourist to stop and visit the former battle fields.
The province possesses 120km of coastline stretching form Dien Ngoc to Dung Quat with many beautiful, clean and deserted beaches. The beaches of Dien Duong, Cua Dai, Binh Minh, Tam Thanh, Ky Ha and Bai Rang together with the lake of Phu Ninh, the rivers of the Thu Bon and Truong Giang and the island of Cham are ideal tourist attractions.
Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Cham Towers have been recognized as World Cultural Heritage since 12/1999.
Transportation
Quang Nam Province is located in the middle of Vietnam, 860km from Hanoi, 947km from Ho Chi Minh City, and 108km from Hue City. The province is on the National Highway 1A, the South - North railway and on the route of Danang - Quang Nam - Kon Tum - Gia Lai - Dak Lak - Dak Nong - Binh Phuoc. Hoi An is 32km from Danang and can be reached by car, bus or minibus.
